Adding Intro Page
Adding an Intro Page to a site
You have a choice of two methods you can use to add a Intro page to your site. Method 2 here
Method 1. Example here of this method & Download .wpp file here
If you have a site already made up or want to use a template and you feel that a site intro page may fit the bill here is a tutorial to add one. If your starting a site from scratch you can use the home page as the intro but still use the custom navbar.
The Intro page may just hold a photo and/or text introducing the site or you may feel a bit of flash/music may be in keeping with the site. Note if using flash/music, always incorporate a “Skip Intro” link into your site as not everyone may appreciate the size of the flash file due to being on dial up.
What is involved
Select the site structure button in the site tab of the studio and highlight the home page > insert page > in the insert dialogue window change the page name, decide if you are going to use a master page and select the radio button in the placement section to place the page before the home page.
Once you have OK out of the insert dialogue box you will notice that the intro page may be at the bottom of the page list in the site structure dialogue box but if you look in the site structure tree in the site tab of the studio you will find the intro page above the home page. Do not close site structure dialogue.
With the site structure dialogue still open select the home page > Properties. The home page properties will open, change the html name to home.html. OK out. Select the intro page > Properties and when this page properties opens change the html name to index.html.
If you have a dynamic navbar already on your pages you will notice that the intro page will have been included, this will not be the case if you already have a custom navbar. You do not want/need to have your visitors, once they have entered the site, to be able to go back to the intro page so you set the navbar to a custom type and not include the intro page.
If you haven’t set a navbar up yet select the insert navigation bar button or if you have a navbar double click it to open the “Navigation bar settings” dialogue.
In this dialogue box select the theme set you would like to use and then select “Custom” in the navigation type. Once selected you will be taken to the custom tab where you will highlight the Intro page and delete the page from the tree. OK out
Note - When using a custom navbar you will have to re-adjust it’s setting if you add new pages to your site.
This method is a little bit easier and you can keep in use the dynamic changing navbar, no custom.
Intro page
Make up your intro page in a one page site. Upload this to the root of your folder on your host.
Main site
When you have made up your main site upload this to a sub-folder, i.e. main, in your root folder on your host. Your link into this site from your intro page would be www.yoursite.com/main
Uploading with WP
If you use WP to upload your site and you put a folder name in the folder option in the FTP account i.e. htdocs, the Intro page would still get uploaded to this. For the main site you would add /main having it as htdocs/main. If you don’t have to put a named folder you would still put /main to upload your main site, you may be asked if you want to make a folder named “main” the first time you upload.
