Setting Up Serif Web Resources Account

First thing to do is to sign up to Serif Web Resources (SWR), If you have not done so already, by selecting the Smart Objects button on the left of screen (you have to be online).(Photo) Select create account link and go through the screens that appear.(Photo) You will be sent an email from Serif that you have to respond to by clicking the link within it to activate the account. At this point some people get 2 emails.

Creating Access Control

Once your account is set up click the Smart Object button and select “new” (Photo) and select “User List” from the list of smart objects and OK out. In the next window put a name in the top right box i.e. Site access and click create. Don't worry about the other options as you can change them later if needed.(Photo)

You should now see your access control in the left column of the smart objects library, select this and click the mange button below, this is where you can add users, make groups, import/export user lists and Ban users.(Photo)

Once this control has been set up you can, if you wish, add the Access Login Control to your site by selecting it from the left column and selecting insert below the right column and then place it where you require users to login. Normally your home page.

Not wanting a login control on your site?

If you do not have the login control on your site any user trying to access

a protected page will be presented with the windows type login box.

Which when the user has logged in with will be able to access any other pages protected by the group list they are assigned to without logging in again. Closing the browser will stop the access and they will have to login again if wanting more access to the protected pages.

Access Control Sign up/login Control

Setting up a sign up/login control enables your users to sign up(if you enable this) and Login. Once logged in the user will be allowed to access all the protected pages or smart objects without having to login again.

There are 3 options to select when setting this access control.(Photo)

  1. CAPTCHA enabled - This is to stop spammers abusing your site by getting sign ups to verify by typing a word displayed as an image.(check by default)

  2. Enable sign ups to user list - This puts a sign up link on your login control to allow anybody to sign up to your user list and then you to manually put them into a user group, to access protected pages/smart objects, unless you set up the user group differently, as we will see later.
If you don’t enable this you will need to sign up users manually.(unchecked by default)

  3. Redirect after Login - This does as it say’s, you can set up a page that users get redirected to after they have logged into the access control. Start the Address with http://

As well as the sign up link, you can have on your login control, there is also a link to “reset the password”. If a visitor who has already signed up to your access control forget their password they select this link and fill in their email address and a new password will be sent to them.

Add new users (Photo)

If you don’t enable “enable sign ups to user list”, on the login control, you will have to add new users manually

There are 3 options to select when adding users.

  1. Email address - This is the email address of the user that will act as their username.

  1. Require activation - New Users are sent an email from serif, with username & password, that they will need to reply to before there access control account is made active. If you don’t need the new user to activate their account then uncheck this.(Checked by default).

  2. Email User - If you do not want an email from serif to be sent to the new user uncheck this option but you will have to do a couple of extra steps (Checked by default);

    1.   Because the SWR would have generated a random password, you will have to set a new password in the User Control at the bottom of the user tab.(see below)

    2.   Email the new user with their username & password.

Note: If your users don’t have an email address:-

If your user does not have an email address, the email address you put in does not have to be valid, as long as it has @ and .com it will be accepted.

Example: b@b.com

Uncheck the “Require Activation”

Uncheck “Email User”

Change the password in the user control section then let the user know their details.(see bottom of this page)

User List

On the left of the User tab dialogue is the list of users that have been signed up to your access control.

If the user has been suspended there will be a * by their email, if they have not activated their account there will be a - by their email and if they are simple access legacy users there will be a +.

Delete User from List

Select the users email address from the User list and select the delete button. The user will be deleted from all groups and the user list

User Control (Photo)

This section is new since the SWR update. It allows you to manually set a new or randomly generated password, activate an account or resend activation email.

Once you have selected the user from the drop down box you can do the following;

  1. Resend activation email - If for some reason your new users did not receive an activation email or deleted it by mistake you can select this option and an activation email will be sent BUT it will not resend the username & password. Once the user has activated their account they would have to select the Reset password option on the login control to generate a new password or you will have to change it manually and inform them of it.

  1. Activate - If a new user is having trouble with activating their account you have an option to manually activate it.

  2. Generate Password - Select this option to have a password randomly generated and emailed automatically by serif to the user.
