Google Maps

To add a little bit of interest to your site

In this tutorial we are going to put a Google map on your site to show the visitors the location of a place of interest.

www.maps.google

Go to your local Google search page and click the link at the top of the page to maps. When you have this up on your screen do a search for a postcode/zipcode, address or place and you should have a map come up with a marker on it similar to this(see photo).

Zoom in or out to get the view that you want. When your happy with the map view, at the top right of the map is a link that say’s “link to this page”, select this and 2 code boxes will drop down(see photo).

Copy the code in the lower box. Select the attach html button(second from bottom on the left in WP), draw a rectangle and paste this code into body when the “attach html” window appears.

You will notice that the size of the map is 425w x 350h. To change this click the link under the code boxes “Customise and preview embedded map” and you will be taken to a customising page.(see photo).

You have the choice of small, medium, large or custom size of map. You can also zoom in/out and move the map by click/drag. When you have finished you copy the code under the map and paste in the “attach html window” as above.

You do not have to have the marker on the map or if you need to move the marker you will have to delete it by right clicking the marker and select clear search results from the menu. To put your own marker on the map right click the point to have the marker and select directions from here or to here from the menu.

Where do you go from here

The method we have looked at above is the most straight forward method of putting a map on your page.

There are a number of advanced options you can do with Google maps but for this you have to signup to Google here.

Have a read through these Google pages to get an idea of what you can do. Here is a link to a holiday map from 2007
